FMCSA's 100 Days of Roadway Safety

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)'s  “100 Days of Roadway Safety” series raises awareness about the increased risk of crashes and fatalities during the 100 Days of Summer – Memorial Day through Labor Day.

During the 100 Days of Summer, crashes and fatalities—especially those involving large trucks and buses, teen drivers, and highway workers—often spike during the busy summer driving season due to several factors including:

  • Increased roadway volume
  • Heavier congestion
  • More inexperience drivers on the road
  • Peak construction and work zone season
  • Distracted driving
  • Speeding
  • Impaired driving

According to the FMCSA’s Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS), there were 170,745 CMV-related crashes and 4,822 fatalities in 2024.  Other transportation authorities such as AAA and the National Road Safety Foundation have cited that teen drivers are 3x more likely to be involved in a crash or fatality during the 100 Days of Summer, leading to many industry organizations and professionals referring to it as the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer”.

In response, FMCSA’s 100 Days of Roadway Safety series will educate, engage, and equip both Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) and non-CMV drivers with safety tips and free resources to help everyone share the road safely. FMCSA will provide lifesaving safety resources throughout the 100 Days of Summer to the public and all stakeholders on their website and social media channels (@FMCSA), its Medium blog, and via email.
