Holiday Road Safety

The holidays are one of the busiest times on America’s roads. Large trucks deliver the goods that power the season, while buses help families and communities travel safely to celebrate together.
Behind the wheel are professional commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers who work every day to keep people and freight moving safely and reliably. As holiday traffic increases, knowing how to share the road with trucks and buses helps everyone arrive safely.
Check out the videos below highlighting the U.S. Department of Transportation's inaugural Christmas tree delivery and lighting, along with a behind-the-scenes conversation with the driver of the Christmas tree on the importance of driving safely around CMVs.
Help Spread Safety Messages
This holiday season, drive with extra care around large trucks and buses. Giving them the space they need helps keep everyone safe on the road—and gets us all to our destinations in time to celebrate. Use the messages and graphics below to help share these important road safety tips on your social channels.
Be Aware of Big Blind Spots
Large trucks and buses have big blind spots on all sides. If you can’t see the driver in their mirror, they likely can’t see you. Give these vehicles extra space—especially during busy holiday travel.
Leave Space for Long Stopping Distance
Roads during the holidays are busy, and large trucks and buses can’t stop on a dime. Give them extra space and avoid cutting in front—it’s one simple way to keep everyone’s holiday journey safe.
Watch for Wide Turns
Trucks need extra room to make wide turns—especially on busy roads during the holidays. Give them space and stay either well in front or well behind so everyone can keep the season moving safely.
