Teen Zone
Driving near large vehicles comes with unique challenges – wide turns, blind spots, and longer stopping distances. This page helps teens learn how to stay safe around trucks and buses, and provides a creative outlet to share safety tips through the Road Safety Art Contest.
Driving Safely Near Large Trucks and Buses
Large trucks and buses operate very differently than cars. Understanding the differences and using these tips help keep everyone safer on the road.
Trucks and buses need more space to make a turn, so they must steer left before turning right (or steer right before turning left). The large vehicle often moves partly into another lane. Stay back to give a bus or truck time and space to turn – and avoid a dangerous squeeze between your vehicle and the bus or truck.

Large blind spots on all sides of a truck or bus can make it difficult for their drivers to see other vehicles. Learn how to avoid these blind spots, and try to steer clear of driving in them. Never pass on the right, where the blind spot is significantly larger than on the left.

Large buses and trucks require much more time to stop than cars – sometimes as long as the length of two football fields! Plan for this extended stopping distance by leaving extra space when passing or merging in front of a truck or bus.

- Be Patient: Trucks and buses accelerate slowly and often reduce speed when going uphill.
- Stay Back When Behind a Truck: When driving behind a truck, leave at least three car lengths of space. If stopped in traffic, keep a distance of 20 feet to avoid being pushed under the truck if your car is hit from behind.
- Buckle Up: Wearing your seat belt is one of the simplest and most effective ways to stay safe while driving.
- Stay Focused: If you need to do anything other than driving, pull off the road and stop first.
- Slow Down in Work Zones: Use extra caution and focus when driving through work zones.
