National Human Trafficking Prevention Month

January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, a presidentially designated observance that raises awareness about human trafficking and empowers individuals, organizations, and communities to take action to prevent it. This year’s theme, “Stronger Connections. Stronger Futures.” reminds us that our everyday connections play a vital role in preventing human trafficking.
In recognition of National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, FMCSA Administrator Derek D. Barrs highlights the agency’s role in combating human trafficking. The video outlines FMCSA’s commitment to raising awareness, strengthening partnerships, and empowering the transportation industry to help identify and prevent this crime.
Kylla Lanier, Deputy Director and Senior Director of External Affairs, Truckers Against Trafficking, discusses the critical role the transportation industry plays in identifying the signs of human trafficking.
Capt. Sean L. Stewart, Commander, Safety Division, Virginia State Police, provides preventive measures aimed at stopping human trafficking for those in the commercial motor vehicle industry.
Activities
January 11: National Human Trafficking Awareness Day is recognized each year on January 11. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Blue Campaign hosts #WearBlueDay each January 11 on social media to encourage public participation in raising awareness of a crime that affects countries worldwide, including the United States. #WearBlueDay invites the public to take photos of themselves, friends, family, and colleagues wearing blue clothing and share them on Facebook, X, and Instagram with #WearBlueDay.
January 11 - 13: The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and FMCSA will feature resource centers at the 2026 Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting with a focus on combating human trafficking. Visit USDOT at booth #854 and FMCSA at booth #1045.
January 13 - 15: FMCSA and its state law enforcement partners will take part in Operation SafeDRIVE, a high-visibility enforcement and education initiative designed to prevent commercial motor vehicle crashes and fatalities while also helping to combat human trafficking. January 26: The DHS Blue Campaign offers a webinar specifically designed for members of the transportation industry working in busing, rail, rideshares, maritime, trucking, and aviation. will discuss how to best recognize and report potential cases, and how you can get involved in raising awareness within your communities.
