CMVRTC: Speed Camera Use
Project Goal:
Assess the deterrent effect of highly-visible, CMV-only speed cameras in areas that experience regular high congestion. Further, assess whether this technology should be used to directly populate FMCSA carrier risk profile data.
Background:
Some areas do not lend themselves to traditional officer-based enforcement due to congestion or gawker effects. Pulling over a vehicle in these areas can actually increase crashes. To more safely enforce speed limits, a study could be conducted on the use of speed cameras (integrated with USDOT#/LPR reading technology) to capture incidence of CMVs speeding in high crash corridors.
Summary:
Conduct study to examine high congestion areas to understand when the congestion occurs and if there is an increased crash risk. Select a test area to install speed cameras, record incidence of speeding over a test period, and compare these data to an analogous area and the same period.
