Discussion Topics

FMCSA seeks information on issues relating to the design, development, testing, and integration of automated driving systems (ADS)-equipped commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) on our Nation’s roadways. This session will provide interested parties an opportunity to share their views on the FMCSRs as they relate to the development and safe integration of ADS. It will also allow FMCSA to share with stakeholders the ADS strategy and open a channel for two-way communication. This listening session will supplement the information gathered from FMCSA’s previous requests for comment on issues related to automation.

Specifically, FMCSA welcomes comments on the application of the following regulatory provisions in title 49 CFR to ADS-equipped CMVs:

  1. Part 383 (Commercial Driver’s Licenses);

  2. Part 391 (Qualifications of Drivers);

  3. Sections 392.80 and 392.82 (Use of electronic devices);

  4. Part 395 (Hours of Service of Drivers); and

  5. Part 396 (Inspection, Repair, and Maintenance).

The Agency welcomes the opportunity to work with all interested parties to identify actions that may be necessary to address regulatory barriers while ensuring the safe operation of ADS-equipped CMVs.
