Sharon Worthy is Director of External Affairs for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. As a member of the Agency’s senior executive team, Sharon oversees three strategic communications offices – Media Relations, Government Affairs, and Outreach and Education. She is responsible for providing expert guidance on policy, legislative initiatives, regulatory implementation and stakeholder and general public relations.
Prior to returning to Federal service by joining FMCSA in early May 2017, Sharon held several senior-level Public Affairs/Policy Advisor positions at the U.S. Departments of Labor, Homeland Security, Agriculture, and Housing and Urban Development, respectively. Sharon has also held executive leadership positions within the Virginia State government. In 2010, Sharon was appointed by then-Governor McDonnell as Director of Policy, Legislative and External Affairs for the Virginia Employment Commission. Most recently, Sharon provided marketing and strategic communications for the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Throughout her career, Sharon has directed large staffs, overseen budgets and contracts. She has consistently focused on strengthening stakeholder relationships and expanding cooperative partnerships.
She has been a frequent spokesperson for national and regional media outlets. Earlier in her career, Sharon worked as a reporter, a producer and a writer. She has worked in the private sector providing communications expertise to small and large companies throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Sharon has also served as a professional staff member for the U.S. House Committee on Economic & Educational Opportunities.
A native Floridian, Sharon holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. She has initiated post-graduate studies in Public Policy at Florida State University.
