Truck Parking Information Management Systems (TPIMS) Synthesis

Goal

This project will review and evaluate truck parking information systems and available technologies in order to understand the state of the practice and what is on the horizon for these systems, and provide this information as a resource for States and local governments. 

Summary

This project involves the following:

  • Presentation to Innovative Technology Deployment (ITD) Program Managers in FMCSA Divisions and States on TPIMS, the necessity of truck parking information for driver safety, and opportunities like mobile apps or data visualization to identify areas of greatest need.
  • Discussion with TPIMS grantees on how systems are working, where are the problem points, and what needs to be done.
  • Survey to Division Administrators and Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program (MCSAP) managers to provide intel on what they are hearing from States on the accuracy or issues with TPIMS and how FMCSA can assist.
  • Synthesis paper on TPIMS state of practice and opportunities for truck parking technology, including:
    • An update of the 2019 Jason’s Law Report that synthesized FMCSA SmartPark and TPIMS technology in the U.S.
    • Incorporation of MC-RRT reports and updates,
    • Review of recent National Cooperative Highway Research Program reports and syntheses on TPIMS, and
    • Assessment of State Freight Plans that are Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act compliant and include the required truck parking section for any intel on TPIMS issues and opportunities.
  • Potential follow-on workshop with States on TPIMS architecture gaps and how to increase connectivity, accuracy, and reliability throughout the nation.

Impacts

This project will identify resources for States and local governments on TPIMS and other technologies that provide parking awareness to drivers.
