Testing of Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems for Commercial Motor Vehicles
Goal
To further accelerate the use of ADAS by trucking and motorcoach fleets, FMCSA will coordinate with NHTSA and vehicle testing organizations to develop and conduct ADAS performance tests for CMVs.
Summary
This will be a multi-phase project. Phase I includes the development of a 5-year roadmap for testing of ADAS technologies. The goal of ADAS testing is to characterize the capability and quantify the performance of ADAS production systems by original equipment manufacturers on board medium- and heavy-duty vehicles (MDVs and HDVs) with gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 10,000 lbs, on a closed-course test track and prescribed public roads. The first year of this roadmap will test FCW and AEB. The following four years of the roadmap will include the timeline and sequence of testing other specific ADAS technologies. The Volpe Center will collaborate with FMCSA, and in consultation with NHTSA, to identify the criteria for selecting the order of ADAS technologies to be tested. Such criteria may include, but not limited to, ADAS technology maturity, product variability, sensing suite, availability of test procedures, target crashes and potential safety benefits, and testing complexity.
Impacts
These ADAS performance tests and results will be similar to the current New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) (i.e., 5-star safety rating). The published test results will be used in the outreach and education materials in the TechCelerate Now project.
