Develop and Test New Inspection Tools to Support ADS-Equipped CMV Pilot Testing

Goal:

To support efforts to define uniform interstate inspection, repair, and maintenance processes and procedures for commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) equipped with automated driving systems (ADS).

Background:

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) collaborates with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) in developing best practices for enforcement of CMVs at the Federal and State levels. That collaboration now extends to an exploration and identification of processes, communication methods, and inspection technologies to facilitate electronic safety inspections of ADS-equipped CMV operations on the roadway, at borders, and in other enforcement settings.

Summary:

CVSA is establishing a Task Force of its Enforcement and Industry Modernization (EIM) Committee to develop a coordinated effort with FMCSA to address best practices for ADS enforcement procedures. To support Task Force efforts, FMCSA will provide contracted research and administrative support. This support will be developed in coordination with CVSA staff and will be under the direction of the FMCSA Task Order Manager (TOM) and the Technology Division liaison with CVSA EIM Committee. Support activities will include participation in and documentation of Task Force meetings; development of the Task Force Charter; development of white papers and decision support documents; synthesis of current activity and research relating to ADS commercial vehicle operations and enforcement; and report development.
