CMV Driver Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment (SASH)

Goal

This project will study the impact of sexual assault and sexual harassment on CMV drivers.

Summary

FMCSA seeks information on how best to design and conduct a study to comprehensively identify issues and potential solutions for supporting truck drivers with problems of sexual assault and sexual harassment (SASH). FMCSA is particularly interested in how to support women in trucking jobs; however, through this Request for Information (RFI), FMCSA seeks information on how best to approach this study holistically in terms of sampling, study design, and in evaluating solutions. For example, FMCSA seeks information on how to best treat categories of gender, sexual orientation, and ethnicity in the study, as well as best practices in designing questions that address the breadth of the trucking career, as well as the evaluation of expansive options to prevent SASH in trucking. FMCSA is further interested in ensuring that study results are disseminated properly and that information about the study, as well as awareness and prevention materials are appropriately developed and provided throughout the truck driving community and that of their customers.

This project will produce a report that summarizes the results of all phases of the study to collect information on CMV driver harassment and assault. It will include the analysis of the survey results.

Impacts

This study will help FMCSA to: (1) understand if there are any regulatory issues or measures needed to improve driver safety through SASH prevention; (2) work with industry partners on outreach and other efforts to improve driver safety through SASH prevention; and (3) support the development of women in the trucking industry.
