U.S. Department of Transportation Assists in Distributing One Million Protective Masks to America’s Truckers

Wednesday, April 29, 2020

WASHINGTON– The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), on behalf of the Administration and under the leadership of Secretary Elaine L. Chao, is assisting in the distribution of one million protective masks to the nation’s commercial truck drivers.

“Under Secretary Chao’s leadership, the Department of Transportation been supporting America’s truckers during this challenging time. We have all seen the incredible efforts that the nation’s commercial drivers are making each day to deliver goods and supplies to homes, businesses, and hospitals throughout America. With the help of our state partners and the motor carrier industry, these protected masks will help truckers remain safe and healthy while they continue to maintain our nation’s supply chain,” said FMCSA Acting Administrator Jim Mullen.

FMCSA has been working with states, industry stakeholders, and motor carriers to distribute one million protective face masks for truckers which were provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

800,000masks are being distributed in the following states:

  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Nebraska
  • New York
  • Texas

An additional 200,000 masks are being delivered directly to motor carriers to distribute to drivers.

In response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, FMCSA has taken unprecedented action to support the nation’s motor carrier industry and protect America’s supply chain—including the first ever hours of service national emergency declaration, actions to allow drivers to still get commercial driver’s licenses and permits, and efforts to ensure rest stops and truck parking remain open.
