FMCSA Transition to the Cloud

Countdown to the Cutover: Impacts to FMCSA Stakeholder Groups

Please see below for information regarding how the FMCSA’s transition to the cloud outage may impact you or your agency.  You/Your agency may be included in multiple stakeholder groups indicated.

If you are a user of FMCSA’s web-based systems including the Portal, MCMIS, SAFER, A&I etc.

  • There will be no change to how you access these systems through the web
  • You will continue to access the Portal, and associated systems, via https://portal.fmcsa.dot.gov
  • Analysis systems that update weekly including GOTHAM reports, the Activity Center for Enforcement (ACE) carrier information, and the New Applicant Screening (NAS) will not be updated past the September 30th weekly run until after the cutover to the cloud is complete

If you are a state or other non-FMCSA user of the following client applications: Sentri, CAPRI, CaseRite, ISS, Guard-eFOTM or some third party applications that uses a virtual private network (VPN) client prior to completing your uploads/updates

  • You will need to start using a new VPN client and a new cloud VPN account password after the cloud cutover
  • More specifically, you will need to set up your cloud VPN account with a new password and download the new VPN client before the cutover to the cloud environment; however you will not use the new VPN client and account password until after the cutover to the cloud is completed
  • If you have not already received the VPN client download and account setup instructions, please find them on the Information Systems (InfoSys) website off the FMCSA Portal (Select “Software”, then “FMCSA Secure Encrypted Access”, and download “FMCSA Cloud Transition- New VPN Client DL and Use Instructions- State and NonFMCSA Only.”)

If you are a user of the CaseRite client application (FMCSA or state)

  • You will need to complete a small export configuration update in CaseRite after the transition to the cloud is complete
  • Instructions on how to complete this minor configuration update can be found on the Information Systems (InfoSys) website off the FMCSA Portal.   From InfoSys, go to the CaseRite webpage, and download the “FMCSA Cloud Transition- New CaseRite Export Configuration Instructions“ document; remember to complete the update after the cloud cutover is complete

If you are a Commercial Vehicle Information Systems and Networks (CVISN) program state participant involved in the use and/or maintenance of your CVIEW system and its connections to FMCSA’s environment

  • You will need to have set up a TLS tunnel with the FMCSA cloud environment
  • You will need to perform either DNS record updates or host file updates with FMCSA production environment IP information on/after the cutover timeframe to continue your data exchanges
  • If you have not yet provisioned a TLS tunnel and/or require the necessary networking information, please reach out to FMCSA technical support.

If you are a Performance and Registration Information Systems Management (PRISM) program state participant involved in obtaining PRISM target files or maintaining an automated system that collects this data

  • If you connect to PRISM via AAMVANet, you will need to migrate your connection off AAMVANet and route it through the public internet (you must complete this change before the other items below apply to you)
  • For connecting to PRISM web services, your current connections will not change; the URLs for the web services will remain the same
  • For PRISM file downloads, no configuration changes are necessary; however you will need to ensure you are using the DNS name of the FMCSA server from which you retrieve the files, and you must manually connect to the server the first time after the cutover to the cloud is complete to add the new cloud server host key to your cache

If you are a state SAFETYNET manager, admin, or user responsible for uploads

  • You will need to have set up a TLS tunnel with the FMCSA cloud environment
  • You will need to perform either DNS record updates or host file updates on your SAFETYNET server and associated workstation(s) with FMCSA production environment IP information on/after the cutover timeframe to continue your data exchanges
  • If you have not yet provisioned a TLS tunnel and/or require the necessary networking information, please reach out to FMCSA technical support
  • FMCSA SAFETYNET users do not need to perform these activities

If you are a FMCSA Kofax machine user

  • You will need to ensure the FMCSA IT Operations field support team is prepared to perform a minor configuration change to your Kofax client on/after the cutover timeframe to continue using the machine for document scanning and uploads
  • To ensure your machine is prepared for the cloud cutover, please reach out to your appropriate Field IT Support Staff members; contact information can be found here (must be on the DOT network to access)
