FMCSA 2012-2016 Strategic Plan
About this Document
The commercial motor vehicle (CMV) industry is a vital part of our Nation’s economic strength and security. Commercial trucks and buses are an integral part of everyday life and livable communities. FMCSA’s goal is to make our roadways safer for the public and the CMV industry. The Agency’s 2012-2016 Strategic Plan presents a new direction and a holistic approach focusing outreach, oversight, and enforcement resources on the entire CMV transportation life-cycle. It establishes a framework that places safety as the highest priority and employs our three core principles:
- Raise the bar to enter the motor carrier industry
- Maintain high safety standards to remain in the industry
- Remove high-risk carriers, drivers, and service providers from operation
We will continue to strengthen our Federal, State, and local partnerships and reach out to stakeholders: citizens, the industry and related associations, drivers, victims, and advocacy groups. To reduce and ideally eliminate crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving CMVs, FMCSA will use education, regulations, enforcement, research, and innovative technology to achieve a safer transportation environment.
The FMCSA is committed to a results-oriented transparent business model that measures performance through managing for results and reporting outcomes. The Agency will strive to build a high performance business process capable of addressing the challenges of the 21st century. We have fashioned this strategic approach to address accountability, performance measuring, managing for results, and operating in a transparent manner as it reports the status of high priority goals and focus areas.
