FMCSA will grant apprentice drivers approval to operate commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) in interstate commerce while they are under 21 years of age. During the pilot program’s probationary periods, apprentice drivers will be able to operate in interstate commerce only when accompanied by a qualified, experienced driver in the passenger seat.
What qualifications do you need to have?
- You must be 18-, 19-, or 20-years-old.
- Hold a valid intrastate commercial driver’s license (CDL).
For the 2-year period preceding the date of hire, an Apprentice Driver may not have:
- Had more than one license (except for a military license).
- Had their license suspended, revoked, canceled, or disqualified for a violation in any State.
- Had any conviction for a violation of military, State, or local motor vehicle traffic law (other than a parking violation) in connection with any traffic crash; or had any record of a crash in which they were at fault.
- Been convicted of any violation in any type of motor vehicle.
- Been convicted of any violation while operating a commercial motor vehicle (CMV).
- Been convicted more than once for other violations.
