Alan Hanson is the Deputy Administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. He is responsible for providing executive leadership and expert guidance on policy matters, legislative initiatives, regulatory implementation, communications, and stakeholder and Congressional relations – all with the focus of helping FMCSA further its safety mission.
Alan brings more than two decades of senior executive leadership experience gained across two branches of the federal government and within the private sector.
Before joining FMCSA in January 2019, Alan served as Deputy Chief of Staff to U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao. Earlier in the Trump Administration, Alan served as an Assistant Attorney General for the U.S. Department of Justice where he directed the Office of Justice Programs.
From 1999 to 2017, Alan worked on Capitol Hill. He has served in roles as General Counsel, Chief of Staff and Legislative Director for Sen. Richard Shelby (AL), and as Legislative Director for former Sen. Jeff Sessions (AL) and former Rep. Anne Northup (KY), respectively. He also worked as a professional staff member on the Senate Committee on Appropriations and as Deputy Chief of Staff and Chief Counsel for former Rep. Spencer Bachus (AL).
Alan earned his Juris Doctor degree (cum laude) from Georgetown University Law Center, and his Bachelor of Engineering (magna cum laude) from Vanderbilt University. Immediately following law school, Alan worked as an attorney in private practice.
Alan recognizes that strengthening commercial motor vehicle safety on our nation’s highways and roads requires continued research and technological advancement, sound regulatory policy, fair and effective enforcement, intergovernmental partnerships, stakeholder engagement, and a commitment to safe driving by all motorists.
