The exhibit is a block diagram of the simulator. It consists of four rows of interconnected colored boxes.

The first row of boxes, from left to right, are the bus monitor / bus traffic generator, the automated transmission electronic control unit (ECU), the engine ECU, the vehicle ECU, the tractor ABS with integrated traction control ECU, and the collision warning system (CWS) with adaptive cruise ECU.

The second row of boxes, left to right, are interface boxes for the power distribution unit, the transmission, the engine , the vehicle, the tractor ABS, and the CWS.

The third row of boxes, left to right, are the generic personal computers (xPC) that serve as the targets for the individual components and subsystems listed above.

Also shown in the diagram is the driver's station with instrument cluster and the interface box and generic personal computer target.

The boxes are interconnected to represent the internal J1939 databus and an external network connecting to a controller area network (CAN) monitor.

The colors of the boxes represent the types of equipment used in the component/system modules: commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) heavy truck hardware, other COTS hardware and software, COTS personal computer with additional custom software, and custom hardware.
