Driver Distraction – Task 3
Utilizing the large naturalistic truck driving database obtained from the DDMS FOT and the 8 Truck Study, truck driver distraction will be investigated. The focus of this data mining analysis project will be to characterize crashes, near-crashes, and crash relevant conflicts that were recorded in the DDMS FOT and in the ongoing 8 Truck Study, and develop a database of these incidents. The study will characterize driver inattention by identifying secondary tasks and other activities drivers are engaged in prior to incident involvement. The frequency and/or percentage of various distractions will be assessed. This characterization will also involve assessing where the driver is looking just prior to the incident occurrence.
